2006 SLO (State Liaison Officers) Handbook

The Boating Department has revised theSLO Handbook. This is a "best
practices" guide for use by district State Liaison Officers (SLO), District
Staff Officers-State Liaison (DSO-SL), and other district management
personnel with state liaison responsibilities. Also, for those members who
live near their state capital cities, and who may seek future appointment as
their district SLO, this handbook is available to study in preparation for
taking theSLO Qualification test.

Coast Guard Auxiliary to be Presented National Award for Boating and Water
Safety 

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has been selected to receive the
National Water Safety Congress' National Award for its role in promoting
boating and water safety. Only one such award is presented annually to an
individual, organization, firm or agency that has made a significant
contribution to water safety issues/programs on a national scale. This is
the highest award given by the National Water Safety Congress.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Presented with Special Award from Association for
Resuce at Sea

Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington DC: On 11 April, 2006, the Association
for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS) http://www.afras.org, awarded an AFRAS Silver
Medal to the National Commodore of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary
for the heroic efforts of Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel during hurricanes
Katrina and Rita.

Alerts issued by the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. Distribution of
this information to the Recreational Boating Community is a key part of our

National Safe Boating Council Grants Announced - Corrected

TheNational Safety Boating Council (NSBC) has awarded their 2006
Recreational Boating Safety Grants. Two Auxiliary units received grants.
District 9WR, Division 5, received $1,000.00 to purchase safety notices for
posting at marinas, docks and boat ramps with a goal to increase awareness
of safety regulations and reduce collisions between vessels. District 17,
Division 1, Flotilla 1, received $1,000.00 to purchase promotional,
advertising and safety materials to provide vessel safety checks, on-site
training and educational courses in remote areas of Alaska. For a complete
