Announcing the 2007 Kellogg/Wal-Mart/Auxiliary "On the Box" Promotional
Program
In March of this year, 4 of the most popular cereals produced by Kellogg’s
and distributed through 3,800 Wal-Mart stores across the U.S. are scheduled
to include a side panel with a recreational boating safety message targeting
Coast Guard Auxiliary boating safety classes and vessel safety checks.
A second wave of 4 snack products is currently being negotiated for June.
A flyer describing the program in more detail is available at HYPERLINK
"http://www.auxadept.org/downloads/kellog_flyer_20070226.pdf"www.auxadept.or
g/downloads/kellog_flyer_20070226.pdf .
Local Auxiliary units are strongly encouraged to take of this tremendous
exposure by establishing Boating Safety exhibits and VSC Stations in
cooperation with their local Wal-Mart Stores. Auxiliarists are encouraged
to wear the latest style of lifejackets to illustrate how cool and
comfortable they are.
To locate the nearest Wal-Mart store, visit HYPERLINK

Vessel Safety Check Program Celebrates 60 Years of Service
2007 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Auxiliary’s oldest recreational
boating safety program, the Vessel Safety Check (VSC). Beginning in 1947 as
the Courtesy Motorboat Examination (CME), the program quickly became one of
the Auxiliary's most important assignments. The Coast Guard published safety
standards and regulations, giving the Auxiliary authority to train members
as “inspectors”. The recreational boating community accepted the concept
with enthusiasm. In May, 1947 the Auxiliary issued more than 1000 CME decals
in the Miami area alone. To recognize and inspire current and future
examiners, the HYPERLINK "http://safetyseal.net/"V-Dept is planning special
recognition for participation in the VSC program plus incentives for
examiners who meet 2007 productivity goals.

Auxiliary Legion Of Merit (ALOM)
Creation of the Auxiliary Legion of Merit (ALOM) was approved by the
Auxiliary National Board in 2005. With Coast Guard concurrence, associated
ribbon, medal, and certificate creation was completed in 2006. Given recent
queries about ALOM status, applicability, etc, and the likelihood that its
description and criteria will not appear in the Auxiliary Manual until later
this year, the following guidance about nomination and award of the ALOM is
herein provided.
